The mysterious chocolate-coloured beauty (whose name is Deniece) and the young man talk easily together, after persuading the bare-shouldered blonde to change her buffer position, and exchange addresses and phone numbers as the young man talks to her in that rare act of bravado mentioned three stations ago at West Norwood (the train is now at Wandsworth Common, which has also miraculously been newly-shaved).

In the carriage the summer scent of new-mown grass persists, although the rest of the journey is devoid of open land.
